DECEMBER 2018
Welcome back to our newsletter page and, may I offer my most sincere apologizes for my very negligent newsletter updates; my only excuses for this were a number of personal issues including two family bereavements. But let us move on and get back to business.
Things in our publishing goals have also taken a back seat but some attempts have been made to get Lisa’s two children’s picture books into publication.

I am pleased to tell you that I have engaged a talented artist by the name of Cynthia Siddells who has done a wonderful job with illustrations for both of Lisa’s books. “Emma” was completed in 2017 and on the first of January 2018 I posted a submission for this manuscript to Random House New Zealand.
Alas a few months later it was returned in its self-addressed envelope after being rejected with no explanation as to why.

Spring 2017
Hello and welcome,
Do I sense a feeling of spring in the air, I certainly hope so, what a wet winter we have had and it is looking like spring may be more of the same. Fingers crossed eh! I haven’t been able to walk on my back lawn for weeks now and it’s looking more like a paddock than a manicured green space of peace and tranquillity.
The whole country has experienced torrential rains causing flooding and land slides. We live in hope.

Winter has been very quiet within Hovding Publishing. It started with a hiss and a roar but has fallen into a lull as some legal and personal matters have had to take priority for an unspecified time.
Illustrations are on hold for medical reasons but there is good news to come with some interesting character changes to Emma. We await these changes with great anticipation but the wait may be lengthy for reasons already mentioned above.
With 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer each and every one of us probably knowing someone who is or has been affected by it. So here is a timely reminder that “Daffodil Day” falls on the 25th of August this year.
Please do give to this worthy cause which does so much for those people suffering from this vial disease, both the sufferers and their families need our support.

In other news, hasn’t politics been interesting over the last twelve months or so, what with the Trump fiasco, Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron and Brexit”. Not to be left in the wings New Zealand gets into the act with Labours
leadership debacle and the “Jacinda Effect”. This year’s elections will be well worth keeping a sharp eye on. I don’t think I have paid politics this much attention in many years.

The magazine I am writing for my work place, “The Driving Force”, (which is on our website), is not going as well as I would have hoped. I do find that it is being read and have had some positive feedback but my idea for this publication was to gain some human interest stories from my work colleagues. Within the work environment we are one person but we can be quite another in our own time and space.
For instance Brad Miller, a driver at our Longburn Depot, has a passion for International Harvester Trucks of which he has restored two of them to date and is looking for his next project. I believe we all have a hobby or other interest that is worth telling and will be of interest to others while revealing another side of our personality. Brad’s story was to be “Front Page” in the current issue but Brad has not had the time to put pen to paper. I will bring this story to you as soon as it is available.
I will produce four issues this season in the hope to spark some interest and then reconsider if this project is worth pursuing. If you have any ideas how I can encourage their stories out of them please tell me. (Click Here)
I will look forward to the next three months with great anticipation, until then we wish you all a
warm and wonderful spring.

Winter 2017
Well after many long months with little or no progress I can finally tell you we have, at long last, taken a step in the right direction.
While having a brunch one day, with my wife Lesley seated on the foot path outside Café Express on The Square in Palmerston North, we spotted Neil Wallace walking by. I caught his attention and had a quick catch up conversation with him and he asked if we had found an illustrator for Lisa’s books yet. When I answered that I had not, he suggested I look up Mike Saywell at the Design School P N just further down The Square. A few days later I did meet with Mike and he put me on to Belinda who had recently used an illustrator on her self-published book.
Three years after Lisa Laney lost her battle with cancer she is being remembered by having new cooking suit named in her honour. On the evening of 04 May 17 we received a phone call from Brendan van Oostveen Principal at Longburn Adventist Collage to ask our permission and to invite us to the opening. Lisa was their Hospitality teacher for ten years; we are so proud of her and will attend this occasion on the 28th of May.

I have recently taken my writing in a new direction by creating a new magazine at work for my colleagues to get involved with by writing and submitting their own stories. The first rough draft called “The Driving Force” will also published on our website. This magazine will be a quarterly and published at twelve week intervals with the first edition due mid-July.
I am looking for human interest stories looking at what my work colleagues get up to on their days off. In the July issue my front page story will be about the restoration hobby of Brad Miller, one of our drivers.

After a game of phone tag we (Belinda and I) finally managed to arrange a meeting at the Design School on the twenty ninth of March. At nine o’clock on twenty nine March we had a very successful meeting discussing writing, self-publishing and illustrations. I also got to view the book Cynthia illustrated and was more than happy with what I saw. At the end of this meeting Belinda agreed to give Lisa’s manuscripts for “Emma” and “How the Magpie got its Name” to Cynthia Siddells her illustrator to consider. By one o’clock I had missed a call from an unknown source because I was attending a friend’s funeral but received a second call by one thirty.
My mystery call was Cynthia and she indicated she would like to illustrate the books for us and would start some preliminary drawings soon. A pre-arranged short stay in Auckland over Easter weekend was well under way when I received another call from Cynthia informing she had the first drafts for Emma ready to view so I was excited about getting back home. We arranged to meet soon after arriving home and had a hugely successful meeting and I saw some fabulous black and white pencil drawings and arrangement were made to go ahead with the full colour versions.
I will keep you up-to-date in our breaking news tab as things develop.

December 2016
Season’s greetings from the team here at Hovding Publishing may you spend this time with family and friends.
At this time of the year we tend to reflect on the past and plan for the future so let’s reflect a moment on the past. What a year it has been with earth quakes, shock resignations and a surprise in the American presidential elections.
Good news this week with the opening of state highway one into Kaikoura from the south this will begin to make living in the region a little easier for the families living there while work continues to get the northern route open.
The shock resignation of Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand’s National Government and the promotion of Bill English to this position, what changes can we expect and how will it affect our future?
But even more of a concern is the result of the American Presidential Elections. Who would have ever guessed that a bankrupt businessman and reality TV star would become America’s next president? I for one did not but I have been known to be wrong before. Am I worried about this development, you bet, but at least I live way down here in New Zealand.
Well at least the milk price is moving in the right direction again so it’s not all bad or is it, from January second we will all be paying 9.1 cents a litre more for over the counter milk, a staple food for most families. I would also expect goods like yoghurt, cheese, butter and ice cream to go the same way.
During this festive season if you are driving on the highways and byways enjoy your trip and arrive at your destination safe.
All the best for 2017 may at least some of your plans pan out for you, (unlike most of mine), Peter Laney and the team at Hovding Publishing.

Well better late than never don't you agree?
I have spent many hours in the gardens over recent months but I can barely see where I have been. With typical spring weather the weeds are growing as fast as I pull them out. I have also had to do some re-designing of the garden in front of the house. e.g. rebuild it completely but the new design will look better and last the distance. here some progress photos for you enjoyment.
More progress photos in my next newsletter.
So what's happening at Hovding Publishing I here you ask, OK maybe not but all good because there is not a lot changed over the last few months. Except to say I have had no replies to my initial interested parties, in the way of illustrations, but I do have a new lead. My current Team Manager has made inquires with someone he knows in graphic design education, and has approached this person with the proposal of doing them as a class learning experience. This is a new avenue to explore with other institutes such as schools etc. fingers crossed for a positive outcome soon.
We do have small but steady list of followers which I very much appreciate and would love to be able to interact with, so if you are one of these people please use the "contact me" link on site or add your comment to one or more of my blogs. I look forward to your comments whether they be positive or constructive criticism.

Winter 2016 Vol 15
Welcome to our second quarterly newsletter, Winter 2016, and hasn’t it been a very mild winter thus far, very wet but mild.
Much time has been spent on the laptop getting Lisa’s first book “How to Look Flabulous” formatted into the various required formats to meet the requirements of on-line e-Book stores. After a number of vetting errors I finally achieved the Premium listing on Smashwords.
“How to look Flabulous” is now available in almost all formats and available in your favourite e-Book store now.
I have joined goodreads.com, an online book club for readers, authors, and other associated person’s. This includes editors, illustrators, reviewers etc. I am hoping to make many useful contacts and be able to contribute to the many ongoing discussions and add my own publishing highs and lows as well as promote our books to its members. If you’re a keen reader why not join too at https://www.goodreads.com.
Almost completed
My next major step forward is to join E-junkie.
E-junkie is a site offering a free shop page service for a small monthly cost. This page includes all of its associated tools such as PayPal and delivery products one is selling, in our case the files containing the e-Books. This would mean we would have our own professional looking sales page on Hovding Publishing’s web site, which also means we could offer sales directly from our own site in both e-book and paperback formats if both are available. It would also mean I could offer a more competitive price for our products, “When we actually have more than one product to offer that is.”
I am awaiting replies from two possible illustrators for Lisa’s next two books, Emma and How The Magpie Got its Name as well as two of mine, I Love Penguins and My New Zealand ABC.
Remember to check back for "breaking news" for updates
In the pipeline
I am awaiting replies from two possible illustrators for Lisa’s next two books, Emma and How The Magpie Got its Name as well as two of mine, I Love Penguins and My New Zealand ABC.
If you would like a free copy of any of these books, click here to leave me your e-mail address and the title or titles you would like to read and I will e-mail these to you. , Emma and How The Magpie Got its Name will come without illustrations.
I am also going to do a re-illustration of My Favourite Animal for a second edition as this would give me full control of this edition.
What have I been writing lately? Well to be perfectly honest I have not written a word in regard to my own books but have been mainly concentrating on putting things in place in on-line forums so everything is up and running when our next books are ready for publication. I am still studying how to become a successful self-publisher and have learnt so much my head is spinning. “Talk about a learning curve I feel I am doubling back on myself”. I had no idea how much was involved or how much time it would consume.
Something for free

On top of all this Hovding Publishing activity I am still driving my tanker although my contract has just expired for this season, and doing my best to complete a major overhaul of the grounds around the house. This includes maintenance to both the inside and outside of the house as well. I thought at my age we were supposed to slow down and relax a little, you know enjoy life with less stress. Fat chance!

April Vol 14
Welcome to our new look Quarterly newsletter.
With the initial setting up period over and things happening at a much more leisurely pace, I thought it better to change the newsletter to a quarterly one to keep it more interesting. I also intend to make it more personal with news of other events happening within our lives. The passing of our lovely daughter Lisa after her long battle with breast cancer has taken it's toll but with the passing of time the pain lessens gradually and I have allowed myself to fall back into a more normal, (if that is at all possible,) life style.
Lisa's book was launched on Amazon as an E-book three months ago for an exclusive period which has just expired so I am now able to release the manuscript to "Smashwords" who will reformat it into all formats and release it on all E-book sites making it available to everyone with an internet capable device. So if you have been waiting for this to happen then the wait will soon be over.
This year will all be about acquiring illustrations for as many books as possible so we may offer more tittles in our catalogue. I am picking this will be very time consuming so I may not be doing much of my own writing for this year but I shell attempt to make as much time available for this as I can.
I have, as I mentioned earlier, tried to get on with life such as it now is, which has seen me working on a new building project. Namely a new picnic table. I spotted one I liked and took a couple of quick pics with my phone (handy things eh?) and used them as my plan. I think I will have quite a unique table when finally completed. I am going to add a frame around the table top on it's edge then stain with a two tone finish.

With that project almost complete I get started on another. What does one do with a fist full of LED bud lights, an off-cut of spouting and shower wall board. two suction cups, black paint with time to on my hands and a vivid imagination brought on by the home made
Christmas present given to me by my son. That's it there on the wall behind my models. He placed pink LED lights behind the canvas which gives the image it's glow.
Nice work Craig.

Welcome to our first news letter for 2016.
December saw little movement in sales which was disappointing but I take full responsibility for this and will have to work harder at promoting our site www.hovdingpublishing.co.nz and Lisa's first book. "How to Look Flabulous". This book is now available in hard copy from our site or contacting me on 022 097 5924 and as an e-book at www.amazon.com
The beginning of this year will be all about finding Illustrators for a number of books I would like to publish this year, these books include two of Lisa Laney's and three by myself. These books include:-
"How The Magpie Got it's Name" a short story for children between five and ten years of age and "Emma" a picture book for Pre-school children both by Lisa Laney.

I also intend to concentrate on my Mylo series of stories and develop more characters to inter act with Mylo and the many situations he finds himself in.

With Christmas upon us I would love to say we have been very busy but that would be a lie as sales of "How to Look Flabulous" as an E-book have been slower than hoped for. After Christmas the price will go up to $3.99 $us and this may bring in a different customer range and boost our sales but it will be the end of March before it is available in all on-line book stores and in all formats including Apple devices.
As for the New Year we are looking ahead to complete some new projects and grow the number of tittles in our catalogue.
Hovding Publishing would like to thank all it's customers and wish them a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Another month gone and we are now only twenty five days away from Christmas Day but you still have time to order your copy of Lisa Laney's book "How to Look Flabulous" available from this site and NOW from www.amazon.com as an E-book.
Yes I finally completed the formatting and launched it on Amazon on the 22nd of November. click HERE
or on the image to obtain your copy now for only $0.99 cents ea. This price is only for a limited time so don't delay too long your click the link above now to go directly to Lisa's Amazon sales page for your copy.It was my intention to release it for free as an introductory limited offer but Amazon has rules about that sort of thing.
So again this month most of my time was spent on study with the goal to get our first book converted to an e-book. An E-book is something I never imagined reading over a printed version, but I must admit I have now have a number of them on my Android phone, both educational and for reading pleasure, and often find time to have a quick read at work, home, waiting for an appointment, public transport. The opportunities are endless.
This task of formatting a manuscript so it can be converted to an E-book was something I never, (in a million years), thought I would ever be doing. But thanks to the "DUMMIES" series of step by step books, I was able to achieve it with much anxiety and the occasional unprintable word.
I continue to study everything I can on writing and publishing. I am amazed by the amount of information available on line to help, and so many people happy to help and share their knowledge for free.
Although I continue to study I now fell a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders and with this relief I have started writing again. In fact I have gone all the way back to my very first writing project.
About ten years ago I attempted to write a book about the day in a life of a Milk Tanker Driver, describing what it would be like to spend a day as a passenger in a Milk Tanker on a normal day at work. My first attempt was much more like an instruction manual for an apprenticeship rather than a captivating story full of the everyday experiences we come across on a daily basis.
But one day it hit me like a falling brick, (Images of the song Murphy and the Bricks swarm into my head at this moment.) I was attacking this book from the wrong angle altogether. Instead of telling this story from the Driver's point of view, I should tell it from the Tanker's point of view. Hence the birth, (Yes birth because the Tanker has in't own personality,) of
MYLO the milk tanker.
This is my first attempt as drawing my own illustrations, but looking at my feeble efforts I think I should leave this task to someone with more talent than myself. I'm sure you'll agree eh!, and I heard that sigh of relief....
Felling less stressed and more motivated, (well to be honest), I got stuck on a supplier's very slippery track and had to wait for two and a half hours for a recover team to pull me up the hill. Not being someone to waste an opportunity I pulled out my note book and wrote the first draft of the first book in my Mylo series. A few days later I had drafted ideas for books 2,3 and 4.
Having recently achieved the ripe old age of sixty five (retirement age in New Zealand) I am looking at gradually reducing my hours of work over the next five to seven years. In fact I am, as Health and Safety Rep for our Transport Department, putting together a Job Share Proposal which would halve the hours of any driver wishing to take up the offer. Instead of working six days on shift then three days off, on Job Share one would work six days on shift and twelve days off. The more I think about it the more I like it, and I would have no excuses for not getting some writing done....
Looking forward we have two more books from Lisa Laney in the wings, the only hold up here is illustrations. As well as the Mylo series I'm working on I also have two short stories on the go and three Early Learning picture books all needing illustrations also, so if anyone out there sees themselves as an illustrator and is keen to have a go feel free to
contact me for more information.
Thanks for coming back again to our monthly news letter and remember if there is any subject your wish to know more about contact me with your ideas and queries I am only too happy to be of assistance.
If you haven't already here again is that link to purchase "How to Look Flabulous" click HERE to download now before the price goes up to $3.99 per copy.
Signing off for now and wishing all a very happy Christmas and may your stocking contain a copy of
"How to Look Flabulous" too.
Read every day.

Vol 10 October 2015
Well I'm back and have some exciting news for this month.
Sorry about last month.
At long last I have made some significant progress in getting out first book digitized, the formatting went well with all the illustrations positioned as they should be and the preview is looking good except for the placement of the photo's which continue to give me some concern. I am hopeful that after publishing it I can do some final editing. Just one issue now with the cover image file not being of the right type for Amazon so need to get it converted. Once again I will have to call on my niece Amy for her help.
I am hoping to have this issue sorted before the end of the month so stay tuned for a launch date.
After the launch I would very much appreciate having some reviews done by our readers of this book.
This is easily done by returning to Amazon.com and searching for the tittle then clicking on the link to 'review this book.'
I will be setting the release price at $3.99 New Zealand dollars but it will show on Amazon in American dollars.
,
I have learnt so much over the last few months and plan to continue my learning so I might bring you a ever improving website to keep you interested.
Of cause I am as always on the look-out for anyone interested in doing illustrations for the works yet to be published and if you have ever thought of putting pen to paper there is no time like the present. There just might be a masterpiece in you waiting to get out so while your sitting there reading this open up word and get started. I am always available to help you in any way that I can and can be contacted through our website menu bar by clicking on "contact me" There I've just made it easy for you just click the contact me link above.
Don't forget it is November and we have that important referendum this month.

Yes it is nearly that time to make the big decisions. If we do in fact want to change our flag (and I'm not saying that we do) but we do need to decide which flag we would prefer
IF we make that decision it all in the second referendum.
By voting for any of these flag choices you will not be voting for a change (that is the second referendum) but just for your preference if there is a change.
Don't forget there is that other flag as well, Red Peak, which was only included because of overwhelming public support. So if you are one of those people thinking of protesting by not voting in this first referendum, you may be doing those supporters of the red peak flag a great service. In other words a non vote may well be as good as a vote in favour of the Red Peak flag. Does this make sense to you or have I gone off the rails? It certainly needs some thought though don't you think. I would love to discuss this with you, you may be able to persuade me that I have it all wrong, so here is that link again "contact me"
Personally I haven't yet made up my own mind so I better give it some more of my time.
Well happy voting and keep up that reading.

Vol 8 August 2015
Another month gone and I haven’t been able to E-publish Lisa’s first book yet. It is entirely my fault too, Amy did a great job of the photos and I stiffed them up when I opened one to view it the Program that opened it changes all of them back to thumb nails again. Grrrr #@@*&&^%* and some.
Well let’s move on shall we to an absolutely un-related subject altogether.
TO CHANGE OR NOT TO CHANGE THAT IS THE QUESTION
Our Honourable Prime Minister Mr John Key thinks New Zealand needs a new flag and would like New Zealanders to decide on an alternative flag to represent our country, should we want to change it in the first place.
So why not, we are after all a country in our right with our own identity so why not a new flag which states just that.
Prime Minister Mr John Key thinks it’s a good idea, so he through his it out there for us to consider and decided that we as New Zealanders should have our say in its final design.
Don't forget it is November and we have that important referendum this month.
From a full list of 10,292 designs a panel of experts shortened this down to a smaller list of 40. With some more head banging this list became just 4 as seen in the picture above. From this four, we as loyal citizen’s, are being asked to choose our preferred design. Sounds pretty simple really, just choose the design you favour if indeed you even want to change the flag at all. This is a “what if” scenario after all and surely not binding in any way. Therefore which flag would choose if you did want to change the flag, simple and it could be fun right?
So to the final four three of which contain the Silver Fern and one a Koru. Two have the Southern Cross while one is red white and blue another is black white and blue. Two are just black and white one with silver fern the other the Koru. Now I may be wrong but I don’t think either of the two black and white flags will receive sufficient votes to be in with a chance so that leaves us with just two. Both of these flags have the Southern Cross and Silver Fern. One being red white and blue the other black white and blue.
These two flags just happen to be Mr Key’s first and second choices, do you think that is just too much of a coincidence too or am I just being a bit cynical?
Love your comments on this issue. click here
Well hoping for much more progress next month.
Happy reading.

Vol 7 July 2015
Welcome, I see you have come anyway, even after my warning of how boring it may be. July has seen little change to our site and my learning, due to having travelled to Rarotonga for a wedding end of last month then down to the deep south of New Zealand (Tapinui) for an eightieth birthday of an aunt on the tenth of July and the ninetieth birthday of my mother in Dunedin a week later.
This alone should not be cause for the lack of activity but the fact that I left my briefcase with all a sundry behind didn’t help. :( It’s a long story and even more boring so I won’t go into it now.
On top of that some of the extended family shared more than their good will with us. And at this time about half of Tapinui, me included, are suffering from a very debilitating virus. Which, Unwillingly I may have shared with my Mate and his wife in Wanaka as well as some of my family in Dunedin. Grrr.
We have been back home since the eighteenth of July and I was to start work again on the twenty second but am still not well enough and have used up all of my sick leave entitlement for this season already. So fingers crossed when I get over this I will be in good health for the rest of the season and some, I do not do being sick very well. It has now been three and a half weeks (seems like a lot longer) of feeling totally miserable and I have had enough. The constant violent coughing has made my torso quite sore.
As soon as I feel well enough I shall get back into the study and preparing Lisa’s first book, ‘How to Look Flabulous’, for E-publishing. I have formatted the text and illustrations but still need to insert the photographs which have become a problem as they are loading as Thumbnails and are too small. Here again I need the help of my Photoshop savvy niece but getting a teenager to sit still and commit to anything at the age of eighteen is quite a mission. Wish me luck.
If I am successful in getting this completed early August I hope to launch it on Amazon before the end of the month but that will depend on whether or not I have formatted everything correctly. (fingers crossed)
We also had to contend with the first anniversary of Lisa’s passing on the 23rd July so emotions have been very intense. Very hard to believe a whole year has gone so quickly.
Don't forget our winter special is still running but will end by the end of the month. Place your order by contacting me at:-

Until next month or when you contact me, keep safe and warm.

Welcome back,
Glad you can make it, and "Thank you" to those customers who took advantage of our buy two get one free offer during June.
This month has been one of a mixed bag with times of much planning and meetings and little action, then at other times of much action and little of anything else. (Including many jobs that need doing around the house. I am accepting all offers of help in that area lol.)
On top of that a break in Rarotonga for my nephew’s wedding and well-deserved weeks long break. Although I must admit to taking my computer with me so some progress was made. I had hoped to do some of my own writing while in Rarotonga but things just didn’t happen quite the way I had planned.
As mentioned earlier I had a very productive meeting with Neil Wallace Creative Director of Passionart at Te Manawa (Manawatu museum) to discuss how he may be able to help promote, How to Look Flabulous, Lisa’s first book. We discussed many ideas and I look forward to working with Neil on making these happen. I will keep you all informed of our progress through these newsletters and Facebook as and when things happen.
I have been working on converting our first book “How to Look Flabulous” into an e-book at the same time as I have been studying to do it, so progress is slow but is still progressing. All I have to do now is add the photos but I will need to change their file type because they have been saved as thumbnails and pixilate when I try to re-size them. So now I have to learn to convert images into other formats also. If it’s not one thing it’s another just another task to be overcome. At least I have an excuse to stay indoors and work on this what with it being our winter and very wet and cold outside and I am learning so much.
Not much is happening in the way of changes to the website at the moment as I am still spending much of my time studying how to become a publisher/writer, even though I haven’t written a single word of my latest book in almost a year now. There is so much to learn my head is spinning I will not list them all here you will just become bored as the list goes on and on.
I am going to put a sample of my practice writing on the site for your comments. Sample writing is something we writers do when we are not writing. Sounds strange right, but that’s how it is. So look for that on our “Sample” page at the bottom of the left hand menu. This sample writing is the very first thing we do when one gets up. We just write what springs to mind at the time of writing and it may not always make any sense but it doesn’t need to. This practice writing is done before you do anything else (although I do make myself a cup of tea which more often than not goes cold) it is un edited and we do not even read it when we are finished. But it can come in very handy if we ever get stuck for a subject for a new book. In other words when we get ‘writers block’ this is when we go back to these practise writings for inspiration. So check out the sample page from time to time and tell me if you think you would like to read more of that sample that way I will be writing the kind of books you want to read.
Well I didn’t think I had a lot to talk about this month but I seemed to have filled a page and a half already. Please use the ‘Contact us’ page in the menu to give me feedback on what your thoughts are on any part of our site because this is your site too and you should have a say in what you want to find here.
And finally, due to popular demand, our buy two get one free offer will be continued through July and remember the first five orders in July qualify for the free Hovding Logo pen. Purchase through our website our txt me on:-

May 2015
“Wow”! On the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd this month we were at the Woman’s Expo in Palmerston North Promoting Lisa’s book. With over seven thousand visitors over the two days we were kept very busy indeed. We successfully created much interest in the book and the website with good sales on both days.
The following weekend was Mother’s Day on Sunday the 10th and Hovding Publishing was there once again promoting itself and How to Look Flabulous. Unfortunately sales were light on the day. It all seems much quieter now that these events are over for another year. My main focus now is to grow the sites and convert our list of books into a digital format for publishing as e-books. To this end I am spending a lot of my time studying the various types of formatting for the many different readers available. It’s like being back at school again but they do say that learning new things in our later years is good for the brain and helps us to stay mentally agile. Whoo Hoo! My text books of choice for this study are Self-Publishing for Dummies and Publishing E-books for Dummies But it's not all that easy because different E-readers require different file types:- MOBI E-PUB HTML AND AZW FOR AMAZON I must say I am actually enjoying the experience immensely and I am learning just how much one can teach oneself. Even if I do say so myself I think this web site is looking pretty good for one who has had no formal computer train at an education facility. (They so there is no praise like self-praise eh!) I am proud of what I have achieved to date and look forward to growing this site into one known around the world in this digital world we live in and for this I need your help. Yes you can be a large part of helping me grow the site by spreading the word through social media sites like facebook, twitter, linkedin etc. Just Like and share the link with all of your friends. I plan on setting up a "Hovding Publishing Facebook" page etc, so I will also have to learn more about these social media sites as it is said they are going to be the fastest way to spread the news and promote our site and its products. I don’t know when I will ever find the time to write again :( June 20th will see me in Rorotonga for a wedding so things will not change on site over that week but maybe I’ll get a chance to write, as last trip to Rorotonga in 2013 produced one book (Not Just Any Old Twig) over the nine days we were there. Please, Please use the CONTACT us button this site and give me some feedback on what information you, as a valued visitor, would like to read about. Quick question:- would you be prepared to answer a small survey on our site. It would only be five questions and there are no wrong answers? Answer here Hope you had a good month stay well and keep warm this winter. Peter Laney Writer - Publisher Hovding Publishing. |
Vol 4 April
Well another month gone already.
This month has been spent finalizing details for the re-launch of Lisa’s book on the weekends of 2nd & 3rd of May at “Woman’s Expo in Palmy North, then the following Sunday May the 10th at 10K for 10K at Hokowhitu Campus Palmy North hope to see you at one or other of these events. I must admit to being a little nervous about the Woman’s Expo as they are expecting over 7,000 people through the doors so a well-known face would be great to see.
I have also, with the help of Amy Allison, been working a re-design of the Hovding logo which Lisa created when she published “How to Look Flabulous”. After much discussion and reworking of ideas we came up with, what I think is an impressive design incorporating her original ships wheel emblazoned with a very curvy upmarket capital H, along with her favourite colours of pink, blue and purple all on a black background. This Logo will be used to promote Hovding Publishing where ever and whenever possible. This Wheel emblazoned H, will be the most well-known as it will appear on all book spines and title pages etc.
I deconstructed the Logo into its separate elements as I needed to use them in different ways for different tasks. E.g. business cards and advertising banners are of differing proportions. I also had some issues with using the whole Logo on the web sites, still working on a final product for that.
Yes that’s right I did say web sites, Plural. I have decided to split Hovding Publishing into one site for providing all the resources need to transform a manuscript into a published book. This site is called “Hovding Publishing Services”, which you are probably on right now, as the new “Hovding Publishing” site is a work in progress and not yet published. This second site will be where one can find our finished self - published books catalogued and available for sale. Initially the only books that will be in the catalogue will be Lisa’s and mine but as time passes and the word gets around, I hope to add more authors to grow that list with a bunch of “Wannabe Writers” not yet published. Of cause you mustn’t forget yourselves, just find a quiet time and start typing you never know what mat appear in screen that other people may want to read, so get writing.
All ready for Woman’s Expo tomorrow so come on down and see me there at Lynne Vautier Pharmacy stand and support breast cancer victim by buying a book and making me donate 15% to Sweet Louise.
As a foot note please use the Contact form on the web sites to give me feedback on what you want to read about in these newsletters and on kind of information you would like to see on the web site. E.g. more info on authors, tips on writing photos etc.

Hovding Publishing Vol. 3 - March 2015
With so much planning and preparation completed over the previous two months I have had a much quieter month with just a few important details to complete.
My next big step is to try and get some air time and column inches to promote Lisa’s book re-launch at the Woman’s Expo on the 2nd and 3rd of May and then the following weekend on Mother’s Day at 10k for $10k. I have spoken with our printers of this first book and have got them on standby to do a reprint if sales go well at the Woman’s Expo. I have been promised a reprint can be completed within the week between one event and the next. So tell all your friends to come and see me at the Vautier Pharmacy stand at the expo to get their copy. And don’t forget “Hovding Publishing” will donating 15% of all sales to
“Sweet Louise” a non-funded charity Lisa was a very strong advocate of.
Earlier this month Lynn Kirkland of the “Herb Farm” got in touch with me by e-mail after she picked up one of my cards at
“Cafe Brie” (a favourite of ours) to see how I may be able to help with a book she had written about a long time connection with an Italian family during WW2. We had an interesting meeting and will stay in touch. Her book is well advanced in fact she had one printed copy which she has been trying to get published without any luck so far. We wished her the best of luck and look forward to reading it in the future but the option to self-publish through Hovding Publishing is still open.
I am still mulling over ideas for the new Logo which changes every time I catch up with Amy. Some very interesting themes coming through too but need to get it finalized for the upcoming promotions etc.
I have spent some time reformatting Manuscripts in preparation for E-publishing as well as studying how to prepare and launch them from our own site. Huge learning curve for me but a very exciting one also. All this reading has meant I am way behind on getting things done around the home so I’m up for any volunteers to help
I have finally started on the resources pages of the web site but progress is still very slow due to time constraints, if only I didn't have to earn a living, there is just so much information out there to be correlated.
I am also look at splitting the site into two main areas, one as a resources and information cradle, while the other will concentrate on our authors and their available books for sale. So keep coming back and check my progress and if you think I’m slacking give me a kick in the butt.

Hovding Publishing Vol. 2 – February 2015
Welcome to my second newsletter, I hope the New Year started out well for you.
So what has been happening at Hovding Publishing during our second month? Good question, (even if I do say so myself).
I want to develop Hovding Publishing as a resource centre where “Wanna-be Writers” can find all the resources they need to be able to self-publish their works. This project will take time to set up and involves the continued building of this website which will hold all the information required to transform manuscript into a published work of art, for writing is art.
So if you or anybody you know has a manuscript they want to get self-published why not try Hovding Publishing for the resources they will need such as:-
Proof Readers
Illustrators
Editors
Cover Designers
Web Designers
Printing Companies
The list goes on, and may forever grow but I hope you get the idea.
During the course of the month it has become apparent that I will have to split our publishing site into two, one site as a place for promoting our writers and the selling of their books. And another as a recourse centre for our “Wannabe Writers” to find the right people to help them turn manuscripts into books ready for sale so still plenty to keep me busy over the coming months.
I launched Hovding Publishing on to Facebook on the 1st of the January with instant increase in sales. I have also made regular visits to our Weebly Site and viewed our stats. On peak day we had 110 page views by 58 visitors so I’m quite encouraged by these results.
Illustrations have begun on Lisa’s third book “Emma” by her niece Amy Allison and I am looking forward to viewing them when completed. Amy is also designing a new Logo to be used for business cards, Web site, brochures and other documents.
Thanks Amy.
I meet with Beth Ellen and viewed some of the completed illustrations for “How The Magpie Got Its Name”. These are all looking great, thank you Beth, great work so far I’m sure Lisa would be happy with what I saw.
It really has been a very busy month indeed. About mid way through we had a breakfast with Lynne Vautier of Vautier Pharmacies and her senior manageress at our favourite eatery Cafe Brie. This was intrinsically a social catch up but the subject of 10k for $10k came up and as a result Hovding Publishing now has its own stall at this event so hope to see many of you there on the 10th of May. Yes it's on Mother's Day again this year, fingers crossed for good weather again
This event is held at the Massey Hokowhitu Campus on Centennial Drive from early till late
If you can’t make it there we will also be at the Woman’s Expo one week earlier in the Vautier Pharmacies stall on the 2nd and 3rd of May. On both of these occasions Lisa’s book will be for sale and Hovding Publishing will donate 15% of all book sales to Sweet Louise an unfunded support group for cancer survivors, sufferers.
I look forward to seeing you at one or other of two these events.
Good health and enjoyable reading.

Season’s Greetings
I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas with family and friends. A new year is upon us and I wish you a happy and prosperous one.
My name is Peter Laney and I am the Father of Lisa Maree Laney recently departed and very much missed. Lisa lost her battle with secondary breast cancer on 23rd July 2014 but before she passed she asked me to continue to publish her books through her publishing co Hovding Publishing. I am of cause honoured to carry out her wish and I hope to publish two children’s books this year. I hope you enjoyed Lisa’s first book “how to Look Flabulous”
Lisa had completed three books before her death and was working on her fourth which I am hoping to bring to a conclusion in 2016. (That’s a maybe)
As for her first book “How To Look Flabulous” I still have copies available @ $21.95 ea if you have family or friends who may want a copy. Her other two books I hope to published this year I am only awaiting final finishing touches to the illustrations to be completed.
The first of these books to be published will be:
“How The Magpie Got Its Name”
Followed later in the year by
“Emma”
“How The Magpie Got Its Name” is set in the country home of Mr and Mrs Branigan. Mrs Branigan is well known in the local area for her home-made pies. One day a pie she had left on the window sill to cool mysteriously disappeared.
“Emma” (Picture book) is the story of a girl with a vivid imagination but discovers that simple is best.
I look forward to offering these new publications to you first as returning customers at a premium price.
Until my next months newsletter I wish you good health enjoyable reading.
